Stencil Techniques for Cards

Hi all! It's been another hot minute! LOL! It's taken me a few weeks to put together this video as I've been working around my 9-5 job as well as uploading more products loaded into my Etsy story and learning how to create YouTube shorts. It's all a bunch of fun but time consuming! 

That said, I am excited to share a new video and five new cards featuring background created with stencils. I am a huge fan of stencils and they are so much fun to use with a variety of products, from inks to sprays to pastes. All of the techniques shown in this week's video can easily be translated to art journals and scrapbook pages.

Thankful Scrapbook Page Featuring The Crafters Workshop Products

Hi friends! Today I'm sharing one of my Crafters Workshop projects that I created a few months ago. (To be honest, I have so many things to share...I just need to find some time to blog! And...I've been working on creating videos! Need to work through my technical issues, mostly with my very old and slow PC, but am hoping to have some new videos to share soon...stay tuned!!) OK, back to the project!

I'm sharing a step-by-step tutorial of how I created this scrapbook page...it was super easy!

I started with a piece of 12x12 cardstock, the Zia Sun Bit (TCW2016) and three coordinating Dylusions Ink Sprays. I laid the mask on the paper, gave one good spritz with an ink spray, and then moved the mask, and sprayed again with a different color. Here's the first half of my page:

Next, I used the Tribal Fish (TCW594) stencil, three more coordinating ink sprays and followed the same steps listed above.

Once my ink sprays were completely dry, I added some stamping using the brand new Seth Apter stamps...LOVE them...by stamping in black Archival Ink. Next, I selected my photo and added a bunch of designer papers and embellishments. It's really all about layering papers, die cuts, words, pins, whatever you have on hand. Becoming a Butterfly

 

Hi friends!  I'm back with a new canvas, based upon this month's Mixed Media Challenge from the blog of the same name.  This month's challenge is to use stamps in a mixed media project.  Since stamps are my first love, I thought this challenge was just perfect for me!

Since I can't imagine any canvas without texture, I started by applying embossing paste through a stencil.  (Product links at the end of the post)

 

Notice that I didn't cover the entire canvas with paste...just a few areas.  Once the paste was dry, I used Dylusions Ink Sprays to add color.  The ink sprays are fabulous for creating drips!

  With this canvas I also opted to embrace the white space...a practice that I find difficult.  I love white and I love color, but boy do I have a hard time doing either option half way!  (What does that say about my personality?  Yup, it's all true! LOL!)

Next I added a bit more design using another stencil and more ink spray.  See that tiny bit of bright pink...I love it...

 

Now it was time for a contrast color.  Nothing makes me happier than a burst of color from the opposite side of the color wheel!  I opted for a turquoise color from PaperArtsy.  Now...what do you think happened when I added wet paint on top of Dylusions Ink Sprays?  Yup...the water from the paint activated the ink sprays and I got a decent amount of brown.  No worries...I waited for the paint to dry and applied more paint to intensify the turquoise color.

 

More drips...oh how I love the drips!  At this point, I broke out my stamps!  Nothing finishes off a piece like adding a neutral.  I used a few Dina Wakley stamps and black Archival Ink to add another design element.  (I love that crosshatch design!)

 

And since I can't live without text circles, I added a few and then used a Stabilo pencil to draw circles around the text.  Using a waterbrush activates the Stabilo pencil, allowing me to broader the lines.  Once the pencil is dry...it's permanent.

 

I wanted butterflies to live in my text circles so I stamped a butterfly from Dina Wakley's Scribbly Insects stamp set three times on watercolor paper.  I used Peerless watercolors (have you tried these?  If not, you need them!) to paint each butterfly and then I used the She Script stamp from Christy Tomlinson to stamp, in white paint, on top of the butterflies.  I adore the white script across each butterfly...divine!

 

Each butterfly was fussy cut and attached with a glue dot.  I folded up all of the wings for great movement and dimension.  The last bit was the addition of the sentiment (also stamped and cut apart) and date stamp (ala Donna Downey...I love adding dates!)  And here is the completed canvas...

Leave Ordinary Behind

 

Hi all!  In an effort to get some of my many projects, created over the past two years, posted on my blog, I'm going to start sharing the art without a lot of commentary on how I created each piece.  This will hopefully get me back to a fairly regular posting schedule...at least until eclectic Paperie is fully closed.  Speaking of closing...everything in the store, with the exception of clearance items and our kits (kits are 20% off), is now 30% off!  Yippee!  Use code EP30 when checking out.

The eye chart design on the background of the page was created using the Eye Chart Layering Stencil and White Embossing Paste.  Once the paste was dry, I used Dylusions Ink Sprays for my second layer (the paste resists the ink sprays!)  I used a stencil and Gathered Twigs ink for my third layer and then added the sentiment, stamped on kraft cardstock, and a few text circles.  The figure is an older Dina Wakley stamp, which you can find at Stampington.

Art Journaling - Wonderful Life

 

Hi folks and welcome to Monday!  I'm back with another journal page, created from the many store samples I made when offering a make 'n take a few months ago.  If you compare this page with the one I posted here, you'll notice that the backgrounds are similar...One to two colors with some black on the edges and simple stenciling in the background.  I've found that this is the best way to start a page...keep your backgrounds simple and then layer.  You'll never be disappointed!  (And if you are...just gesso!)  

The stamped design on the edges of this page, in black, are from Dina Wakley's Textures stamp set.  (See all product links at the end of my post).  The circles are just the top of a Distress Paint bottle, dipped in black paint and Dylusions White Linen ink spray.  Easy peasy!

My top layer involved a simple tag.  You can see that the tag already had some blue ink on it, probably from some other project I started a while ago, and I just used a Tim Layering Stencil to add some design to the tag background.  I then stamped a flower from a Wendy Vecchi stamp set on to the tag, which was colored with Copic Markers.  I stamped the same flower a second time, on plain cardstock, and colored again.  The second flower was then cut out and attached to the tag.  I ripped the bottom portion of the tag and then used a blending tool to age all of the edges before attaching to my art journal page.  The torn bottom piece of my tag was attached, using the Tiny Attacher, to the upper right hand side of the page.  All of the words and the butterfly are all part of a package of Remnant Rubs.  Super quick page to create...Enjoy and hope today's post has inspired you to create something new today!  (Product links below)

Art Journaling - Where There is Love

 

I confess that I was a bit slow to grab hold of this whole art journaling thing.  Truth be told, when I first bought the store (eclectic Paperie), I'd never even heard of folks like Dina Wakley and Christy Tomlinson and the idea of using paint and ink sprays to make journal pages was foreign to me.  I was a card maker and for some reason thought that's what I'd always be.  But the eP customer base was hot for mixed media projects and products so I figured if I was going to sell it then I'd better start using the products.  It was kind of a rocky start, boy did I make a lot of muddy pages, but I kept taking classes, watching blogs, and playing with the products.  And I have never had SO. MUCH. FUN.  I love this type of creating, love journaling, love every single bit of this type of artwork.  Swoon...

I have a bunch of projects, just pages I've created here and there that I've never shared and I'm trying to get better about consistently blogging so here's the first of one of those pages!

This page started as a free make 'n take that I offered in the store, using Dylusions Ink Sprays and stencils to create background pages.  All we did during the make 'n take was spray a page, use a stencil, and added a few stamped images (need that neutral in the background!)  After the make 'n take, I came home with a ton of this colorful pages, just begging for more!  (You can find all product links at the end of this post).

To this page, I added a drip of hot pink ink spray...love the contrast of the pink against the yellow/orange.  I then stamped one of Dina's scribbly women on a piece of watercolor paper and used watercolors for filling in the face and shirt.  A punched butterfly made the perfect hair accessory!  For the tag, I spread Distress Ink on to a stencil, spritzed the stencil with water, and pressed the stencil on to the tag...great technique and I love the look.  Then I glued the tag to my page, added a few pieces of tissue tape, and layered the image on the tag.  I then stamped the sentiment on another tag, cut out the individual words and applied to the tag.  I think this baby may be one of my favorites...

Dylusions Ink Sprays - A Quick and Easy Art Journal Page

 

I created a quick and easy art journaling inclusion using Dylusions Ink Sprays and stamps by Dina Wakley and Wendy Vecchi (oh, and a sweet little tag created by my oldest son...).

Get Dolled Up

Oh boy...big post today!  I may keep it light on words and heavy on pictures...'cause it's the pictures everyone comes to see, right? :-)  There's also a video at the end of today's post!

These are two projects I created for this week's Feed Your Creativity video (created for eclectic Paperie).  This week I played with a gesso resist technique again but this time I combined gesso with stencils!  (Supply list, with links at the end of this post)

My tag features the Wall Flower stencil from Claudine Hellmuth and darling stamp set, Mini Courture, from Dyan Reaveley.  (If you don't have one of Dyan's Courture stamp sets...you need to get one...they are amazing!)  I also used Dylusions Inks Sprays for the background colors.  (I say Bubblegum Pink in my video but the pink is actually Funky Fushia!)

My next project is a super bright and kind of busy art journal spread....but I'm ok with the brightness...it's all girly!!

I started by using the same gesso resist and stencil technique mentioned in the video and then I added the Dylusions Ink Sprays.  I then added some design by using the Wendy Vecchi Brick Wall stencil and more Dylusions Ink Spray (Dirty Martini).  I then added both girls, using the Flossie stencil from Dyan...there was a bunch of masking going on - yes, a video is in there somewhere - with both of these girls...some techniques we learned at the retailer show a few weeks ago.

I then added text (a stamp) and a stencil design to both girls (love the text over the flowers...fabulous) and outlined them with a black marker so they would show up better...since all of my colors were in the same color family.  And those white dots?  Thanks to Dyan (her idea) and a gel pen...I LOVE this look and am seriously going to be adding white gel pen dots to all of my future creations!

I then added a bit more stenciling, using another Crafters Workshop stencil and some Black Soot Distress Ink.  Before adding the sentiment, I added a bunch of leaves from a Dyan stamp set (link below) and colored in the leaves with Dylusions Ink Spray and a paint brush.  (Yes, more white dots on the leaves!)  The ink sprays are a great coloring tool and I love how you can see the color on the leaves but you can also see the stencils and gesso underneath...fun stuff!

First things first...I have to just share this...I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my art journal!  Creating in it is seriously one of the most fun things ever!  I  am having a blast!  If you think art journaling isn't up your alley or that you're not very good at it...then this post is for you! 

Today's post is all about how I transformed two blah pages into something that I "amore!"  I even created a quick video, showing the steps, which I'll post at the end of the page.  But before we get to the finished product...let's see what I started with...

Here are my ugly pages...in all their glory!  LOL!  OK, maybe they're not ugly but it might seem obvious that this is one of my first attempts at art journaling.  I didn't really know how to work well with ink sprays, as evidenced by those big blue spots (lack of water and blending).  My color choice is well...a bit lacking and I'm not even sure where I was going with any sort of design.  I was basically trying out a bunch of products on these two pages; stencils, embossing paste, and ink sprays...and I wasn't very happy with the results.

My new design all started with this month's challenge on the Wendy Vecchi fan board...the challenge was to stamp through a stencil or to use a stencil as a mask.  I knew I had these pages, with that sweet stenciled heart, already sitting in my studio but what to do with the pages and how to make it work with the challenge.  As I sat staring at my pages, I spied a photo of Wendy's projects on the page that comes with her stamp sets, and one of her projects included a pretty cream-colored heart.  That was all I needed to get the wheels turning!

I grabbed my acrylic paints (since I needed good coverage) and got to work!  You'll see all of my steps in the video but I basically covered the entire piece with dark blue acrylic paint (I'll link all of my products at the end of the post) and started over...adding new stencils, colors, and a quote (this made me think of my sweet hubby...who really is better than what I ever dreamed a partner could be).  Once I finished covering the pages, I finally pulled out the large heart stencil, to use as a mask, and using a text stamp from Wendy, added my stamped image through the stencil!  Challenge completed!  And here's the finished project!

I love the deep color and the accent of yellow and orange...and hey, I even used a piece of the gesso resist paper from last week's project for the sentiment...perfect colors on that piece of scrap paper (that would be because I tend to gravitate to the same colors on all of my projects! LOL!)  I was so happy with the finished product, not so much because of the design but because I was able to salvage those pages that I wasn't that crazy about...and create something that reminds me of my husband.  At the end of the day it's all creating what makes you happy and enjoying the journey of experimenting with different products and techniques.  Such a joyful experience!  Here's a quick list of what I used on this page and the video can be found right after the product list.  Enjoy!!

Be Brave

Happy Tuesday!  This week's mantra is be brave!  Be brave in trying new techniques, be brave in trying new products, and be brave is stepping out and doing some things that you may not be all that comfortable doing...like recording weekly videos!  Yup...I've taken the plunge and am going to be doing my best to post weekly videos on the new eclectic Paperie You Tube channel!  Glup!  I'm a bit nervous as I tend to get too tense when I know the camera is rolling and then I'm full of  "ums...." as I try to remember what I wanted to say! LOL!

However, I have two new videos posted...one showing how I used Faber Castell Big Brush Markers to create the shading on today's flowers, and another (which I posted last week) demonstrating a gesso resist technique. 

So...Big Brush Markers...they're a blast!  I've been having so much fun playing with them again...I bought them about two years ago and they've been sitting in my studio ever since, mostly because I didn't know what to do with them!  I'm just learning, hence the simple video, but am hoping that as I learn I'll be able to share my ideas and techniques with you!

 

As for today's card, it was actually created for last week's Mix-ability challenge on Splitcoast.  The challenge was to use pen in some way on your project.  I started by using Dylusions Ink Sprays on a piece of cardstock and then stamping the Poppy Background stamp (a Donna Downey design) onto the sprayed paper.  (Oh, I also used the new Quartrefoil stencil with the White Linen spray on the background, before the stamp!)  Then I got to work with the Big Brush Markers, coloring in those beautiful flowers.  Once my coloring was done, I went back with a fine tip marker and re-sketched the outline of the stamps and added some sketch lines to the insdie of the flowers...to give it that hand drawn look.  I also added some doodles around the edge of the card and traced the sentiment (from teh She Sprouted Wings stamp set) onto a piece of vellum.  I then mounted this big 'ol card (it's almost 7" x 4") onto a piece of white corrugated cardstock (from Fancy Pants) and added some pick buttons to finish everything off!

eclectic Paperie eTeam Picks Challenge

Howdy and welcome to March's eclectic Paperie eTeam Picks Challenge!!  Don't know much about this challenge?  Head on over to the eP blog to find out more and to find out how to enter for a a chance to win a $15 gift certificate to eP!

This month's challenge was selected by Bonnie and she inspired us to create a project with corrugated cardboard or cardstock.  (And you have to check out her amazing project!)  Since we just received a shipment of 12x12 corrugated cardstock from Fancy Pants, I knew I had to get busy and create a scrapbook page to show off a photo of my oldest from his birthday party last week.

Believe it or not, this started out as a piece of kraft corrugated cardstock but I couldn't leave it just like that...I had to alter!  I started by adding some white embossing paste to give me a surface to add some stamping or rub ons, if the mood struck.  Then I added color from a few ink sprays (After Midnight, Lemon Zest, and London Blue.)

Next I used white linen ink spray (love this stuff!) and a few stencils to add some design to the page.  (My second stencil got a coat of black acrylic paint)

Then I grabbed a paper pack that I've been hoarding for years and pulled out some papers that I thought would work well for my page.  I randomly stamped a script image on one of the papers and used a few older rub ons on some others.  (Rub ons...just random...I love that!)

And then...I have these darling balloons that were created using a new Sweet 'n Sassy product that is going to be announced next week...hummm...and see that Happy, Happy BDay sentiment...that might be part of a new release next week too...and then there's the hat in the photo below, the candlesticks, the tiny flames...Ohhh...exciting stuff!  Make sure you don't miss the release party!!

The balloons, hat, and candlesticks/flames were all die cut and then some elements were stamped, for design, and others were just cut from the designer paper pack.  I layered up a journal card, swirl, sentiments, and my design elements all in one spot on the page, just below the balloons.

I also had these fun corrugated numbers in my stash that were the perfect color for the page.  I added those and another run on sentiment before calling it a day!  Oh, and I kept my photo black and white since there was so much color going on with the page.  I must confess...I do adore scrapbooking.  It's such a great way to capture memories.  This new page is now hanging on my living room wall and is a constant reminder of my sweet boy and the joy he experienced opening not one...not two...but seven new Lego sets on his birthday!  A builder's paradise!
